The objective of this special collection is to bring together contemporary research, thinking and critical scholarship about adolescent girls and young women (AGYW), both empirical and theoretical, in sub-saharan Africa (SSA). The special issue aims to draw together the work of academics and policy makers to make available current thinking, evidence, responses and debates relating to AGYW sexual and reproductive health needs in SSA. It is expected that this interdisciplinary and cross-cutting special issue will provide an avenue for experts at universities, international organisations, civil society groups and intergovernmental organisations to offer important insights on the subject matter. Singing to the Lions is a new workshop tool by Dr. Jonathan Brakarsh of Zimbabwe with Dr. Lucy Steinitz of Catholic Relief Services that helps children and youth develop skills to resolve the impact of violence and abuse in their lives and to heal. The workshop has been successfully implemented in several countries with promising results, and it is also a lot of fun — using games, art, movement and songs. Participants who sign up for this three-day Training of Facilitators workshop will experience Singing to the Lions first-hand and also have the opportunity to discuss how this might be adapted and implemented in their own settings, across different cultures. Two young researchers and a facilitator from the NGO Uganda Youth Development Link (UYDEL) have been selected to attend a young researchers program as part of the SVRI Forum 2017 to be held from 18-21 September in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. A key theme of this year’s Forum is participatory research with a focus on children and young people’s participation. Read More

REPSSI and its partners host a biannual Psychosocial Support Forum to promote awareness and understanding of the importance of psychosocial support (PSS) and to share knowledge on approaches to providing it. The Sexual Violence Research Initiative is seeking to identify 10 young researchers between the ages of 18-24 who have engaged in participatory research activities on violence against children to attend the upcoming SVRI Forum 2017 as well as 5 NGO facilitators to support their participation in the conference. The Forum is scheduled to take place from 18-21 September in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Participants selected for this program should be based in Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and/or East Africa. Read More

For the past two years, J Initiative (JI), a RISE regional working group member, has worked with key child protection stakeholders in the public, private and civil society sectors to mark Safer Internet Day (SID) in Ghana. Organized under this year’s global theme, ‘Be the change: Unite for a better Internet’, the SID 2017 forum was held in Accra on 7 February 2017, with parallel events also occurring in other parts of the country. Key partners and attendees of the event included World Vision International, Facebook, Vodafone-Ghana, Tigo-Ghana, Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Ghana Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-Ghana), Ghana Education Service, and the Ghana Institute of Journalism.
